Arcane crafting is Thaumcraft's first extension to Minecraft's crafting system. It works similarly to ordinary crafting, but instead of the ordinary crafting table, it uses the Arcane Workbench (AWB). Like the basic crafting table the AWB has nine material slots and one output slot, but it also has a special slot for a wand (or scepter) to be inserted. The AWB can make any crafting recipe that a normal table can, and these will not require use of a wand. However, it also allows a variety of magical recipes provided by Thaumcraft. Such recipes need to be researched before they can be used, and also require a wand containing enough vis of appropriate types for the recipe. Note that while vis costs are listed with the recipe in the Thaumonomicon, several factors can modify those costs, starting with the wand caps used to make the wand. Various equipment worn by the thaumaturge can also provide bonuses (discounts), while certain warp effects can inflict penalties (surcharges).
Unlike the vanilla crafting table, the AWB can hold items even after its interface is closed. This can be useful in various ways:
- Loading the makings for many unstackable items, and carrying them off as inventory permits. This is especially useful when making large numbers of unstackable items to be distilled in the Alchemical Furnace.
- Putting together a recipe whose components need to be assembled or acquired separately.
- If the player discovers their wand is short of vis, they can go recharge it or fetch a full one, without dumping the recipe contents.
The Arcane Workbench is created by placing a table in the world, right-clicking it and palcing a want in the upper-right inventory slot in the GUI.
Tables are crafted as so:
